Brief Explanation about the Book of Muwaṭṭaʾ Malik

The Muwaṭṭaʾ (Arabic: الموطأ‎‎) of Imam Malik is the earliest written collection of hadith that encompasses various subjects of Islamic law. Compiled and edited by Imam Malik ibn Anas, it is recognized as a foundational text in Islamic jurisprudence alongside the Qur'an. However, it is not merely a compilation of hadith; many legal principles within it are derived from various sources beyond hadith alone. The book addresses rituals, norms, traditions, and legal precepts relevant during the time of the Prophet Muhammad.

Reportedly, Imam Malik selected just over 1900 narrations for inclusion in the Muwaṭṭaʾ from a vast pool of approximately 100,000 available narrations.

History

Amidst increasing juristic disparities, Caliph Abū Ja‘far al-Manṣūr requested Imam Malik to create a standardized book to serve as a legal reference for the country. Although initially refusing in 148 AH, Imam Malik acquiesced when pressed further by the Caliph during his visit to Ḥijāz in 163 AH. The Caliph advised him to compile his understanding of various issues into systematic chapters that would reflect balanced principles in accordance with the Prophet's teachings.
